EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) The electronic delivery of government benefit funds (i.e., food stamps, Social Security).
ECP (Electronic Check Presentment) A service wherein the merchant scans each check through a MICR reader and forwards the check’s contents for collection through the Federal Reserve’s automated Clearing House system (ACH).
EDC (Electronic Data Capture) The collection of payment data from payment cards and transmission of that data to the Acquirer for processing.
EDI
EIRF An additional assessment for a credit card transaction that does not qualify at the CPS CardNotPresent MOTO Interchange rate.
Electronic Data Interchange Information sent and shared electronically between two parties.
Electronic Funds Transfer A transfer of funds that is initiated through an electronic terminal, telephone, computer, or magnetic tape, for the purpose of instructing or authorizing a financial institution to debit or credit a cardholder’s account.
Electronic Software Distribution Software that can be downloaded or sent via electronic means.
E-Mail Electronic Mail is a way of sending other people messages from your PC. Widely used facility on the Internet, which sends addressed messages over a network in a matter of minutes.
E-Mail Confirmation Confirmation sent upon receipt of customer order.
Encryption (Pin-Pad) The process of loading code keys into a POS debit pin-pad. There are currently two encryption methods used for this purpose: Master Session and DUKPT.
ESD
E-Services “The next E,” e-services include both e-commerce and e-business to encompass any asset that a company makes available on the Internet to drive new revenue and create new efficiencies. An example might be the ability to embed Fed Ex tracking information into a customer service order tracking system.
Express Shopping Techniques that expedite the shopping experience. An example would be Amazon.com’s one click shopping option.
External Development Utilization of a 3rd party to develop web sites or builds any related functionality.

Fault Tolerance

 

 

A processor whose system can execute transactions despite hardware component failure.

File Data is stored in the form of a file. Files can be program files-contain instructions that allow the PC to perform various tasks under the control of the user or data files, which contain information only.
Firewall A security barrier placed between an organization’s internal computer network-either its IS system or intranet-and the Internet. It keeps the user’s personal information in, and intruders out. It consists of one or more routers which accept, reject or edit transmitted information and requests.
Flame An intentionally crude or abusive e-mail message or usenet post. Note: not only is it bad “netiquette,” it leaves a trail!
Fleet Cards These cards are designed specifically for shipping companies and are honored by all major gas companies. They are used exclusively for fuel and maintenance expenses.
Floor Limit A dollar amount (set in accordance with VISA/MasterCard regulations). A merchant must obtain authorization to process a transaction above their floor limit. Note: the floor limit system is being replaced by a zero floor limit policy on most transactions, which requires authorization on all transactions regardless of the amount.
Forced Transaction Any transaction for which the required data is not electronically captured by reading the Card’s magnetic strip.
Forms The pages in most browsers that accept information in text-entry fields. They can be customized to receive company sales data and orders, expense reports or other information.
Frames Divides the browser window into key sections for displaying multiple HTML pages at once.
Freeware Shareware, or software, that can be downloaded off the Internet at no cost to the user.
Front-End Processor Front-end processors provide the communications systems that connect the merchant’s point-of-sale device to the front-end’s credit card authorization and data capture networks. Front-end networks perform authorization and capture of merchant credit card transactions.
FTC Notification Compliance with FTC requirements to notify shoppers after thirty days if merchandise is not available offering customer next step options.
FTP File Transfer Protocol that enables information files to pass from one computer to another online. Fortunately, the commands are embedded in most browser programs and all the user has to do is click.
Fulfillment Sending products to customers through internal or external facilities.
Fund Review A 24-hour hold that is placed on a new merchant’s first batch of transactions and reviewed by the processors security department to insure legitimacy.
Future Delivery Any sale for which the product or service is not delivered at the time of the sale transaction. (I.e., subscriptions, custom products, ISP service)

GIF

 

 

Graphics Interchange Format is a graphics format that can be displayed on almost all web browsers. Most of the pictures online are GIF files. They display 256 colors and have built-in compression.

Hit

 

 

Each time a web server sends a file to a browser it is recorded in the server log file as a “hit.” Hits are generated for every element of a requested page (including graphics, text and interactive items). For example, if a user views a page containing two graphics, three hits will be recorded-one for the page itself and one for each graphic.

Home Page The page by which the user normally enters a web site. Typically it welcomes the user and introduces the purpose of the site to them. From there it provides links to the lower-level pages of the site.
Host Location from which web site is delivered and maintained.
Host Capture A system that stores authorization and transaction information in host files (as they occur) rather than in the POS terminal itself.
Hotlists These can be pull-down or pop-up menus on browsers that contain new or popular sites.
HTML HyperText Mark-up Language-the text based language used to construct www pages and is interpreted by web browsers.
HTTP HyperText Transport Protocol is the programming protocol that defines how-or commands-a web server to respond to a request for data, whether text, graphics or multimedia. Without it, no information would pass along the web from a server to your computer.
Hyperlink A clickable link in text or graphics on a web page that takes you to another place on the same page, another page or a whole other site. It is the single most powerful and important function of online communications.
Hypertext Any text that can be chosen by a reader and which causes another document to be retrieved and displayed.
